Mission And Accomplishments

•    Operates a 10-acre animal sanctuary in rural Sarasota County that provides lifetime comfort and care to 350+ animals, not only cats & dogs, but rabbits, geese, ducks, pigeons, pot-bellied pigs, horses, goats, & sheep.

•    Has run the sanctuary since 1989 on a shoestring budget of $1 per day per animal.

•    Is one of 30 sanctuaries in the U. S. certified by The World Society for Protection of Animals.

•    Takes in only animals that have nowhere else to go & facing being euthanized (on death row)

•    Has saved the lives of thousands of unwanted, sick & abused animals.

•    Sponsors a monthly free to the public, feral & free-roaming spay neuter cat clinic that has fixed 3,200 cats in the last 6 years preventing thousands of unwanted kitten births.

•    Provides adoption enhancements for Sarasota County Animal Services shelter dogs & cats.

•    Has adopted out over 4,500 homeless dogs & cats in this adoption program since 1994.

•    Represents animals by speaking out on critical issues, i.e. animal cruelty

•    Has initiated changes in ordinances & laws on animals at the local, state, & national level.

•    SDA has no paid administrative staff

•    100% of contributions go toward animal welfare.

•    All fund-raising is done in-house.

•    Sarasota in Defense of animals (SDA) is registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, ID No. 65-0124076. SDA is a corporation organized under the laws of the State of Florida, filed on June 29, 1989 and the document number of the corporation is N33042 and has complied with the registration requirement of Chapter 496, Florida Statutes, the Solicitation of Contributions Act.

•    SDA is supported primarily by tax-deductible contributions.
